Global Tel Link Overcharged Taxpayers

Securus Technologies has recently published the first in a series of reports that bring attention to the wrongdoings conducted by Global Tek Link (GTL). GTL was given the responsibility of overseeing inmate communications. In Louisiana, it was found that GTL knowingly committed various actions that led to artificially inflated profits.

GTL programmed its technology so that additional seconds would automatically be added to calls, higher rates were charged to calls, add-on charges were included without reason, and some calls were double-billed. These practices added up to over a million dollars worth of charges. This cost was passed on to the taxpayers in Louisiana.

The infractions were uncovered during an investigation launched by the Louisiana Public Service Commission. The particular order to look into GTL improprieties dates back to 1998.

Both Securus Technologies and GTL are in the technology field and have various contracts with law enforcement and public safety agencies. By releasing these reports, leaders at Securus Technologies feel that they are sending the message to others that unethical actions will not be tolerated. Securus prides itself on upholding its high standards and feels that all those who serve customers, whether public or private, should also take their responsibilities as seriously.
