A career as rally driver – the life of Michel Terpin

Rallying has become one of the most followed sports in Brazil. Its increased presence and notoriety is due to in large part the bigger than life following accorded to the top drivers in the country. This is an elite group of men and women who dedicate their time and money to ensuring that they continuously compete in this sport and at the same time ensuring that its visibility continues to grow. Sponsors have also come in droves branding the competing cars and to this end, they have given even the less known drivers a lifeline.

The Brazilian sporting culture is also much appreciated and this is the reason why sporting families are highly regarded and followed. The Terpins are such a family they began with their father who was commonly referred to as Jacko this was a nickname given to him by those closest to him. He began his career as a basketball player who represented his country and team in various competitions. He led his team to win the club championship too. He would, later on, pass this passion for sports to his sons Rodrigo and Michel Terpins. Both are very successful rally drivers.

Michel Terpins began his career at an early age and by the time he was in his teenage years he was competing in the cross country championship. He would with the support of his father develop and nature this talent and passion and by the time he was in his twenties he was able to become the country’s cross country champion. This was a position he held until the time when his brother approached him to join rallying. He was selected to be the chairman of the cross country organizing committee and has helped steer it to great heights and today its well-recognized thanks to in part his overwhelming efforts to make it a mainstream competition.

He is a member of the Bull Sertões Rally Team a team that he and his brother co-founded but has today grown into a bigger outfit. He competes for the T1 prototype and currently he and his team are using the T-rex.
